If you’re new to exercise or an activity, you’ll have to
accept that the beginning is just that. Good for you for trying. If
you could love being bad at something for 30 tries, you’d have the
basic skills for just about any activity in 30 days. You won’t have
the muscle memory. So you’re not the kid who grew up skateboarding
who then picks up surfing quickly as a teen. By the time you try
snowboarding in college, you’re flying down a black diamond slope.
You’re the person whose body is going to pull back instead of lean
in when you look down that hill and you’re going to fall hard on
your bum. It’s going to hurt. We all start somewhere.
I did not play any of the ball sports growing up. My hand eye
coordination is terrible. Being mindful means understanding it’s
going to take me longer to enjoy it. I won’t have the basic skills
right away to have a good game so I need to stick with it and come
in with a good attitude.
You also won’t know when to stop and when to go. That comes
with experience which you only get by doing. Soreness will
eventually become manageable, even welcome because you’ll know just
how hard to push.
